Salon Locator

Case Study

This Case Study project is a web app or a website called Salon Locator. Salon Locator is for users who would like to search and book appointments for affordable salons nearby with just a click of a button. All users either will sign up as first-time users or will sign in as returning users. All users will be able to search for salons and spas at a specific location, make appointments at a chosen salon or spa, and then leave reviews. Users can search for salons by entering the name of the salon and can view the salon information such as the address, the phone number, the hours of operation, the services provided, the pricing, the photos inside and outside of the salon (optional), the logo (optional), and the website (optional). When users want to leave a review, they can use the heart rating: One heart is the lowest rated and the worst and five hearts is the highest rated and the best. The more five-heart ratings a salon has, the more popular amongst users. Sharing the app and one or more salon (or spa) through email or social media is another feature users can enjoy. In addition to that, users can delete their accounts.

I looked through Google Maps and Apple Maps in order to compare the features as well as determine what the advantages and disadvantages of each app are. Google Maps allow users to upload their own photos relating to their experiences at the salon or spa. Of course the photos are moderated, which means unrelated and inappropriate photos are removed swiftly. Other establishments that are nearby or are related are advertised as well. Apple Maps, on the other hand, is more limited in what is provided. Visuals, for instance, are omitted. There are few, if any, photos that are included in establishments that are listed. However, just like Google Maps, the websites of these establishments are included. What’s missing on both of these apps are the ability to allow users to make appointments straight from the app. It cuts out the extra step of having to either call the business or access the website. The convenience of users having the ability to schedule appointments through this app even during closing hours while searching for other salons nearby is what sets Salon Locator apart from Google Maps, Apple Maps, and other web-based mapping services.

I used Adobe XD to design the low-fidelity wireframe and uploaded a copy of it on Figma since I no longer have a paid account with Creative cloud. I’m in the process of designing the low-fidelity wireframe, the high-fidelity wireframe, and the prototype for mobile apps. I’ll complete them shortly and provide links for them soon. I also will re-design the low-fidelity wireframe for the desktop and tablet version on Figma.
